His first lockless folding knife, the NAND, introduced us to his "techno-primitive" design style, combining sleek, futuristic lines with classic simplicity. A stepping stone from this model is his COBOL, which expresses his unique variation of the ball-and-socket locking mechanism with a more dramatic, Asian-inspired aesthetic. The upturned blade is a hybrid of the traditional Japanese tanto pattern and the katana-style tip of the Americanized tanto. Precision-machined from M390 stainless steel using particle metallurgy, its saber-like primary edge blends seamlessly with a flat edge on the faceted tip. At the opposite end of the blade is an extended "tail" that allows the knife to be opened one-handed, like a classic straight razor. The COBOL's handle features solid titanium scales with integrated spring arms and ball bearings. When the knife is opened, ball bearings index the holes on the sides of the blade to hold it in place. Hand pressure on the blade tail and a wide groove at the base of the edge further ensure a secure and stable grip. To complete the fully ambidextrous design, the COBOL includes a reversible clip with a deep pocket that offers the option of carrying it tip-up in either the left or right hand.
